Is a Christian just a “good” person? I don’t think so. There are lots of “good” people out there that don’t believe in God at all. There are also Christians out there that are not “good” people.
Is a Christian someone who is trying hard to do what is right? If you are trying hard to not do wrong that doesn’t necessarily mean you are trying hard to do what is right.
According to Jesus there is only one thing we need to do as Christians. Sounds too simple right? What about DOING our part? What about WORKS, aren’t they important too? When Jesus came down here to earth He was against the works, the laws of the religious leaders, the legalists. Jesus taught that the most important thing was to sit at His feet. Does that make you nervous? Thinking that works and laws are not most important? Why do you think Jesus said only one thing is needed? Jesus is telling us that if we sit at His feet the fruit will come. We will morph into “better” people, who do better and abide by God’s law.
What does it mean to “sit at Jesus’ feet?” Well, I think it means primarily three things. We need to talk to God, read His word and share what we learned from the first two. That’s it. Very simple.
Have you ever heard the phrase Salvation by Faith? Sounds complicated. In fact what does it mean? Really all we need to do is understand the simplicity of the gospel. What does gospel mean? The word gospel means “good news” and the good news is the fact that Jesus came to earth, lived, died and was resurrected for us so we have the opportunity to spend eternity with Him in heaven.
To make the gospel quite simple all you need are two texts. Number one is John 15:5: “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” We can do NOTHING without Jesus.
The second text is Philippians 4:13 which says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” We can do ALL things with Jesus.
So to be a Christian doesn’t mean we work our way to heaven. It doesn’t mean we just try hard to do everything right and nothing wrong. NO! NO! NO! Stop being legalistic. Stop trying to do everything yourself. Stop looking the part, stop acting the part and just listen to what these two verses are telling us to do…GET WITH JESUS AND STAY WITH JESUS!!! Jesus will take it from there.
